In 1972, at the Olympic Games in Munich, Soviet gymnast Olga Korbut performed a daring and incredibly risky gymnastics move known as the 'dead loop.'
The move involved standing on the higher bar, executing a backflip, and then re-grabbing the bar.
The 'dead loop,' also named the 'Korbut flip' in her honor, has been banned for the last 50 years due to its extreme difficulty and potential for serious injury. Even for experienced gymnasts, one wrong move could result in a devastating accident.
The move's risk was considered too great for others to try, making the 1972 Olympics the first and only recorded instance of the 'dead loop' being performed in public. Despite its danger, unfortunately, the move did not make Korbut win the gold medal. She was surpassed by East Germany's gymnast, Karin Janz.
