The Coast Guard Cutter Munro caught the submarine during its first mission. The Coast Guard has added new ships to their fleet recently. This is important because most of their old ships need a lot of money for repairs.
Some criminals use special submarines to smuggle drugs. The Coast Guard caught 14 of these submarines between May and July. They seized a total of 39,000 pounds of cocaine and 933 pounds of marijuana, worth $569 million.
US Vice President Mike Pence was there when the Coast Guard members brought the drugs to San Diego. They will arrest 55 people who they think are involved in smuggling drugs. Some will be taken to court in the United States, and others will be sent to their home countries for trial.
