Recently, a 63-year-old cleaner in Singapore was in the spotlight. This man has to climb the high bridge on Bedok Reservoir Road for about 20 minutes every time he works. He works six days a week.
This bridge has 132 steps connecting Blk 613 Bedok Reservoir Road and the industrial area near Chai Chee Lane.
The cleaner man lives at Blk 615 Jalan Waduk Bedok. He also worked across the bridge at the factory, as Shin Min Daily News reported.
Climbing the bridge is easy for young people. However, this man is elderly and has osteoporosis.
Another 60-year-old cleaner also had to climb the bridge to work.
At first, he thought his workplace was close to the MRT. But the bridge makes the journey more difficult, especially for older people.
There is only one option to cross this area, except by bus.
Younger people may think of bridge stairs as an exercise. But for older adults, this causes problems. People who use wheelchairs also cannot use the bridge.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is considering building a lift on the bridge. LTA's decision to make a lift on the flyover depends on the presence of older adults and input from the public.
They have built lifts on 83 pedestrian overpasses. They plan to add 24 more bridges by 2025.
