Understanding 'Ring of Fire' Solar Eclipse That Is Currently Visible

On October 14, a special 'solar eclipse' natural phenomenon will be visible in the sky.

It creates a stunning "ring of fire" effect on our eyes.

This phenomenon happens when the moon is farthest from Earth, unable to completely cover the sun. This forms a 'fire ring' around its shadow.

The eclipse will start at 9:13 a.m. PT in the U.S., journeying from Oregon to Texas and then across Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Panama, and Colombia, ending near Brazil's coast.

Even if not in the eclipse's direct path, a crescent-shaped half solar eclipse will be visible across the continental U.S. as well.

If the weather is good, NASA will livestream the event from various locations.

NASA encourages people to see this solar eclipse, as such occurrences are very rare. They predict the next 'ring of fire' solar eclipse will happen in 2046.
