France Named An Airport After Queen Elizabeth II

Le Touquet Airport in France will be renamed after Queen Elizabeth II. The move to honor the former ruler of Great Britain was taken after receiving permission from King Charles III.

"Le Touquet, in northern France, received the blessing of King Charles III on Monday, August 21, 2023," said city officials.

The airport will be named Elizabeth II Le Touquet-Paris-Plage International Airport. The date for the inauguration of the new name has not yet been set.

The proposal to use Queen Elizabeth II's name was submitted to the United Kingdom six days after September 8, 2022.

Le Touquet authorities explained that the naming was also a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II's late uncle, Edward VIII.

Edward VIII often visited the resort in the commune to relax, including horseback riding, and he was sometimes accompanied by Queen Elizabeth II before his nephew took the throne.

"With King Charles III accepting the proposal of the mayor of Le Touquet, it further strengthens the strategy that wants to emphasize Le Touquet as the 'most English French resort'," said Le Touquet City Hall.

Le Touquet airport was designed in the 1930s to welcome Britons to the coastal town about an hour's drive from Calais.

President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte also have a vacation home there.

Le Touquet hopes the new name of its airport will strengthen ties between them and the UK.

Next month, Le Touquet will host the England rugby team as they play in the Rugby World Cup hosted in France.
